A UN human rights investigator is visiting Myanmar on a mission to assess the current situation of human rights in the country, state media reported Monday, amid ongoing concerns over alleged rights abuses against Muslims in western Myanmar.

  • Yanghee Lee, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, arrived Sunday for a 12-day mission and is scheduled to visit the conflict-prone areas, including Rakhine State, and meet with government officials.
  •
  • Lee’s latest visit comes amid reports of increasing security concerns in Rakhine, where there has been reported persecution and abuse by authorities against the minority Muslim Rohingya population.
