Nay Pyi Taw – The Ministry of Finance has sought approval from the government to raise taxes on beverages and tobacco from the beginning of the 2015-2016 fiscal year which starts in April.

The ministry's bill says taxes on cigarettes will be increased from the current 100 percent to 120 percent of production cost, while commercial tax of other tobacco products and beverages will be increased from the current 50 to 60 percent.

Taxes will be levied on the value of items after they have been imported or on the market price value of domestic products.

If the bill is not amended, the new tax rates will take effect on April 1.
