Over 3 million Myanmar citizens live and work in Thailand, where their legal status is ever-precarious: just this week, a new Thai policy requires migrant workers to forfeit residency documents in exchange for temporary "pink-cards" that many say are too expensive, and leave them vulnerable to exploitation by their employers, as well as arrest and deportation.

The Myanmar Times’ award-winning staff photographer Zarni Phyo takes us inside the daily lives of Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand. His photos reveal the regular day-to-day moments – routine, mundane – of a Myanmar community where the threat of abuse is never far, and there is an ever-present fear of losing freedom, wages, and the right to work.
