Burmese Buddhism

Buddhism in Myanmar is the ancient faith infusing all aspects of life in Myanmar.

Although a few minority populations practise Christianity and Islam, around 90% of the population is
Buddhist. If you were to judge by the number of monks or the amount of money donated, Myanmar could
claim to be the world’s most fervently Buddhist country.

Burmese Buddhism is a unique blend of the ancient Theravada school which hews most closely to the Buddha’s original teachings and indigenous forms of spirit (nat) worship inherited from the animistic beliefs of hill tribes as well as from the early
Hindu-Brahman traders.
