A guide of Prome city (Pyay), Myanmar

Pyay (Prome city) is situated on the bank of the Ayeyawaddy River in Bago divison. (I visited to this peaceful city in early November to see my friend.

What to do in Prome city? Why should we visit there?

If you are interested not only a peaceful local place but also very ancient thing and also wanna try many local foods, Prome will be your destination.

Here is the list of attraction you should visit if you decided to go to Prome city.

Attraction near Prome City

Shin Hlaing Gu Pagoda

Situated on the small hill on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. The best time to go there is in the evening or early morning to see the beautiful sunset with the background of the Ayeyawaddy River.

Shwe San Daw Pagoda

The pagoda which is situated in the center of city and easily accessible area.

This pagoda is one of the famous pagodas in Prome and located on the highest part of the city. You can see this pagoda from any part of the city.

Ten stored Buddha Statue

is located just behind the Shwe San Daw Pagoda. It is the very large Buddha statue and famous for its magnificent structure.

Shwe Bon Thar Mu Ni pagoda

Situated on the other side of the Ayeyarwaddy river.   It is one of the four famous pagodas (Mu Ni) in Myanmar while the others are in Mandalay, Rakhine and Za Lun.

I would like to suggest you to go there in the evening around 4 to 5 pm to see the scene of before and after sunset of beautiful Ayeyarwaddy River. There is a small local restaurant near this place which is just on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River.  I am sure you will see the beauty of Prome city along with the mother of Myanmar (Ayeyarwaddy River).

Mya Sein Taung Pagoda

It is in the Shwe Taung Township which is near the Prome city. It is one hour drive from the city. It is situated on the hill and very quite place. I visited there with many friends and played around in the small Maze.

I think if you want to visit this place, it is better to bring some friends along with you because it is a bit far and the place is so quite. If not, you might have nothing to do in this place after 15minutes in there. With many friends, you might not know the time is passing by breaking the quietness.

The last but not least is the ancient city Sri Ksetra

Pyu cultural heritage region which is nominated in the world heritage list. It is located in east of the Prome city which is about 6 kilometers away from this city. You can see the remnants of culture, art and glorious time of the magnificence city which was formed between 4th to 9th Century AD.

You can see different gateway to enter the ancient city such as Natpauk gateway and Lulinkyaw gateway. There is also a museum which exhibits the varieties of cultural properties which were discovered at Sri Ksetra and its environment. When you entered the ancient city, you will see the various kinds of Pagoda which is different in architecture from the other temples and pagodas you saw in other area. These are the places you should visit when you are there;

1. Baw Baw Gyi Ceti

2. Phaya Gyi Ceti

3. Ashey Zey Gu Pagoda

4. Lay Myet Hna Pagoda

5. Paya Htaung Pagoda

6. Bei Bei Temple

7. Sri Shetra Palace Wall

8. Rahanda Cave Temple

9. Royal Cemetery (Cemetery of Queen Beikthano)

The distance from one place to another is at least 10 mins by car and some will take at most 20 mins by car. If you visit there in winter season, you can take a bicycle to visit these places to enjoy the ride while observing the ancient things. But don’t forget to bring water as there is no food stalls inside the ancient city.

Shwe Myat Mhan Pagoda

located on the way to Shwe Taung Township and can visit there at the same time when you go to Mya Sein Taung Pagoda.

A Kaut Taung

Many pagodas were built on the side of a mountain which is situated on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River. It takes one hour drive from the Prome City and you’ll need to take a boat to see the beautiful scene.

If you are in the city, you might want to try some of the local places and local dishes. Here are the places you might not miss the chance to visit.

Nawaday Bridge

Taking the picture in early morning or sunset with the background of the Ayeyarwaddy River will be the breath taking shots.

Sate Kan Thar Teashop

It is famous for the special red tea made with the real milk, they called it “Silone” and is available only in morning time. So, you should not miss the chance to try this teashop in the morning. I am sure you will definitely like it if you are a fan of Myanmar red tea.

Daw Ou Hta Min Thote (Rice salad)

Prome is the famous for its unique style Hta Min Thote (Rice Salad).

People living in Prome love to have Rice Salad instead of white rice in every meal. It’s worth to try their rice salad and explore why they love it so much.

Kyat Thout San (Chicken, soup like curry)

Kyat Thout San is also one of the local dishes available in the Prome city. Actually, it is a chicken curry with less oil and much soup. It tastes like hot, spicy and a little bit sour. If you order only this chicken curry, they will provide the local side dishes as well. If you would like to try the very local one, you should try this one at least for a meal.

Shwe Taung Noodle

Osaka is not the name of city in Japan; it is the name of noodle shop in Shwe Taung Township. It is the famous noodle shop in there. Shwe Taung noodle is the famous for its unique style and the best only in Shwe Taung.

Even if you can order Shwe Taung Noodle in some restaurants in Yangon, the taste will be very different. Why don’t you try the famous Shwe Taung Noodle while you go to Shwe Myat Mhan Pagoda and Mya Sein Taung Pagoda?

Prome garden restaurant

If you miss western style food after trying local food a lot, there is a nice restaurant is waiting for you to serve various kind of Western food and Chinese food. The name of this nice restaurant is Prome Garden restaurant. There is also a bar to choose if you want to spend your evening with friends talking about your experiences and relax your mind.

After reading this post, you would like to visit this place as soon as possible. But don’t forget to plan this trip during the winter season from late November to early March as it will be very dry in summer and some places could not be assessable in rainy season.
