The train from Pyin U-Lwin to Lashio

Famous for the Gokteik Viaduct, you can take advantage of Myanmar’s beautiful landscape, take the train from Pyin U-Lwin to Lashio, but be warned that this is a beautiful, but meandering 15-hour journey.

The train passes through the Shan State, a region once rife with bandits, a problem which has since been eradicated. After Pyin U-Lwin, the train travels by gardens, valleys and small towns and of course the Gokteik Viaduct.

Gokteik Viaduct, a vast bridge measuring more than 300-metres, is one of the highlights of the journey. The viaduct was completed in 1903 and was an engineering feat. After crossing the viaduct, the green turns into orange orchards and bamboo trees, jungle, and the Namby River, until you pull into Lashio around 9pm.

The train originates in Mandalay, but many drive 45 minutes to the hill station to shorten the journey by more than three hours.
