Mandalay Hill

Must See Mandalay Hill

Mandalay Hill, Mandalay, Myanmar

Mandalay Hill (daily 8am-5pm, entrance fee) overlooks the city and has been a revered pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists since the mid-19th century when King Mindon built his palace there. Four stairways lead you up the hill, and for those interested in hiking, the climb is a rewarding experience.

Near the summit is an enormous standing Buddha whose right hand points towards the city. At the top you will find the Sutaungpyei Pagoda and a panoramic view of Mandalay and its environs, but this is not the end of your trip.

The Mwegyi Hnakaung Pagoda is adorned with the images of two cobras believed to have travelled to the hill to pay respects to the Buddha. Pilgrims who visit stick banknotes in the mouths of the snakes. Still, the real reason to visit is for the spectacular views from the top and the most popular, and scenic, route up is from the south side—remember to remove your shoes at the bottom!
