Welatha Cliff

After leaving Bhamo, the Ayeyarwady crosses a fertile plain as it approaches the Second Defile, or narrow passage. Flanked by steep cliffs covered in thick vegetation, the 12.5km (7.5 mile) passage is the most scene along the river.

In the rainy season, the water's depth can reach an astounding 61 metres (180 ft). When the water is low, elephants haul teak logs from the jungle to the river's shore.
