Golden Rock Pagoda

Must See Golden Rock Pagoda

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

The Kyaitktiyo 'Golden Rock' Pagoda is one of Southeast Asia's most otherworldly sights. The pagoda sits atop a granite boulder in the far north of Mon State. The boulder seems to defy gravity and looks as if it will fall at any moment.

Legend has it was built atop a single strand of the Buddha's hair. Between November and March, the pilgrimage seasons, thousands climb daily to visit the shrine, one of the holiest in the country.

Pilgrims add their own golden leaves to the rock. Per Burmese custom, pilgrims must leave their shoes behind an ascend barefoot. A paved path was constructed in 1999. Women are not currently allowed into the inner rooms of the pagoda.
