Shwedaung, Myanmar

A popular stop on the Ayeyarwady Valley's pilgrimage trail is the Shwemyetman Pagoda at Shwedaung, 14km (9 miles) south of Pyay. The shrine contains a lacquerware Buddha famous for wearing golden spectacles (myetman)—the only one of its kind in Myanmar.

Legend has it the spectacles were a gift from 4th-century King Duttabaung after he lost his vision, and worshippers arrives in droves after news of his cure spread.

Over the centuries, the glasses have been repeatedly stolen, so replacement pairs have been brought in on a number of occasions.
